The Sree Rama Temple at Thriprayar stands on the bank of the Theevra river, also called the Purayar, on the coastal road between Guruvayur and Kodungallur in Thrissur district. Devotees lovingly call the Lord Thriprayarappan or Thriprayar Thevar. This is the first temple on the Nalambalam pilgrimage, when devotees visit the shrines of Rama and his three brothers on a single day during the month of Karkidakam.
Here Rama has four arms, holding a conch, a discus, a bow and a garland, with Sreedevi and Bhudevi on either side. Devotees feel that he carries something of Shiva and Brahma as well, and many come to pray for courage and for relief from fear and evil influences. Feeding the fish in the river and the booming vedi offering are part of everyday life at the temple.
The story goes that this idol of Rama was once worshipped by Sri Krishna himself at Dwaraka. When Krishna left the world and Dwaraka was swallowed by the sea, the idol sank beneath the waves. Long afterwards it was found by fishermen near Chettuva. According to the Nalambalam tradition it came with idols of Rama's three brothers, and Vakkay Kaimal, the local chieftain, guided by a dream, installed the four at Thriprayar, Irinjalakuda, Moozhikkulam and Payammal.
Another legend explains the river's name. When Vishnu, as Vamana, passed through this dry land, he poured water from his kamandalu to wash his feet, and that water is said to have become the ever-flowing Thiruppurayar, the sacred river – which, over time, gave Thriprayar its name. Devotees also believe that Hanuman is always present at the namaskara mandapam in front of the sreekovil. He has no idol here, but people bow at the mandapam before they worship Rama.
For a long time the temple belonged to three Namboodiri families – Cheloor, Janappilly and Punnappilly Mana – and their members still take part in its rituals and festivals as ooralans. The original stone idol has worn with age; rather than replacing it, the temple covered it with a panchaloha casing. The temple is now administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board. Thriprayar Thevar is also the presiding deity of the Arattupuzha Pooram, one of the oldest temple gatherings in Kerala.
